Northwood

Northwood

Architecture and unique properties make Northwood such a desirable place to live.

Welcome to Northwood

Northwood is one of the most unique and interesting neighborhoods in West Palm Beach. Its centerpiece is a figure-eight street layout surrounding the highest natural peaks in South Florida at 44 feet above sea level. A wide variety of architecture exists in Northwood Hills, ranging from the 1920’s-1950’s. Some of the city’s finest and most unique homes were built here because of the topography and walkability of the circular streets.

What was once a backwoods suburb with rum runners selling illegal booze from their Spanish castles is now a community-oriented neighborhood in the heart of the city. While it is still a sleepy neighborhood, it is located just 4 blocks from Northwood Village where you can find funky restaurants, art, music, and shoppes. Being just 3 miles from the beach and downtown means you never have to venture far to enjoy the best parts of South Florida living.

The Old Northwood Historic District is one of the most beautiful and friendly neighborhoods in West Palm Beach. Its distinguished architecture—Mediterranean Revival and Mission-style—reflect the historic development era of the mid-1920s made famous by Addison Mizner throughout South Florida. Builders associated with the famed architect carried his vision of design and scale from Palm Beach to the eastern shore of Lake Worth where Old Northwood began. The architects and builders of the 1920s—like John Volk, William King, and Henry Harvey—built their homes here and left an indelible mark on Old Northwood. Many of these historic homes have been completely restored in recent decades.

Historic Northwood

Northwood, like El Cid, Flamingo Park, and other prized neighborhoods with historical homes in West Palm Beach, was built around the 1920’s. The homes in this part of town, which sit on the upper boundaries of West Palm Beach to the north and the intracoastal to the east, are mostly built in the highly sought after Mediterranean revival style.

It is this architecture and the appointments of the unique properties that make Northwood such a desirable place to live. In addition to the interesting architecture, the neighborhood sits just north of downtown West Palm Beach, providing quick access to shopping and dining but not completely away from it all.

Northwood is also known for having its own share of trendy dining experiences and the local downtown area has undergone a revival in the past years. There are nearby art galleries, frequent wine tastings, and the allure of the waterfront that make this such a special place to call home.
